Artist G Raman

Director Statement:

G Raman is an accomplished artist who has exhibited widely
in both India and internationally. His works consist of intricate
designs and colorful depiction of figures. There is a wonderful
texture and energy in his work. The gamut of indigenous
motifs reinvented into modernistic formalisms typical to what
emerges from around the Cholamandal school. For Raman
this means a classic Indian imagery with ornately voluptuous
deities and graceful humans stylized on the former, where the
omnipresent linear contour turns into an almost lace-like
decorative tracery. Whilst such interpretation of tradition is
common to many painters, Raman has found his trademark
in this lace impact fortified by the contrast with the
predominantly blackish background. The sole innovation is the
areas of colorful abstract patches added to the same formula.

Biodata

Born in Chennai in 1942, Raman is an alumni of the Government College of Arts and Crafts,
Chennai. He still resides in the very same house where he lived as a child and for the past four
decades he has used the house as his studio as well. An accomplished artist, Raman has an
affinity for details and colorful figures. Much of his work refers back to the design of traditional
Indian art. Hindu mythology has also featured strongly in his work. He has an interest in Christian
imagery and his works include several depictions of Christ. G. Raman uses color to enhance the
significance of his line work and this feature is what sets him apart from other South Indian artists.
