Artist profile

G Raman

Born 1942, Chennai

G. Raman was born in 1942 and trained at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai, with diplomas in drawing, painting and fine arts. He has worked for decades from the same house in Chennai, which is also his studio.

His paintings return to line, motif and symbol. Subjects are often drawn from Hindu mythology, with some Christian scenes, and from village life, as in Tambura Player (2009). He works over a black ground, then builds dense white drawing and bright colour.

Public accounts place his work in the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata, and the Hyderabad Museum, and note exhibitions in Madras, Bombay, Calcutta, Cochin, Singapore, Japan and Seoul.

Drawn from Artsy, artnet and Great Banyan Art. No published portrait of the artist is shown here.
